We want to partner with you.

The threats and risks that schools face every day are terrifying and ever present.  Suicide is now the 2nd leading cause of death for college students. School shootings left 113 people dead or injured last year.

Lumina is committed to solving these problems on a national scale, and we can sponsor your school.

The answer lies in technologies that proactively identify risks and provide schools with timely, actionable intelligence. Our Radiance platform is that technology. We’ve configured Radiance’s AI and machine learning capabilities to help schools use publicly available information to identify students at risk of suicide and identify potential school shooters in their planning phases.

Though not flawless, Radiance provides administrators and school communities with the best technology available today to prevent the devastating loss of young lives.

We believe so strongly in the power of these tools, we are offering it to every school in the country, regardless of ability to pay.

That does not mean the services are free. Rather, it means we will sponsor those schools who do not have the funds to purchase these tools themselves.

Radiance (OS-INT)SM

Open Source Intelligence (OS-INT) component scours all publicly available information on the web, prioritizing current behaviors to predict future action. OS-INT’s education bundles includes almost 9,000 terms related to suicide ideation, drug misuse, and school shooting threats.

OS-INT performs more than 175,000 searches across the entire web, correlating names with associated risk behaviors. A manual web search of this magnitude would take just over 72 weeks – or 1 year and 3 months – for one person to complete.

Radiance (HUM-INT)SM

Human Intelligence (HUM-INT)
or S4, mobile app allows for real-time, confidential reporting of suspicious behaviors.  Information that comes into S4 can be overlaid with data from OS-INT, providing edge-to-edge risk detection across the spectrum of challenges schools face.

A centralized management portal allows clients to access real-time threats to geo-fenced facility locations, allowing for timely intervention.

An Open Letter to Our High Schools and Colleges:

I’m writing to you today, not as the CEO and Co-founder of Lumina, but as a parent, a grandparent, and the friend of someone who recently lost his child to suicide. It’s because of that tragedy – and the thousands of others like it across our high schools and college campuses – that I am reaching out today. As you know all too well, the threats and risks that you protect our students from every day are terrifying and ever present.  Suicide is now the 2nd leading cause of death for college students. School shootings left 113 people dead or injured last year. At Lumina, we want to solve these issues – and the other threats facing our students – on a national scale. And, we want to partner with you.

We believe the answer lies in technologies that proactively identify risks and provide schools with timely, actionable intelligence. Our Radiance platform is that technology. We’ve configured Radiance’s AI and machine learning capabilities to help schools use publicly available information to identify students at risk of suicide and identify potential school shooters in their planning phases. We believe so strongly in this technology, we are offering it to every school in the country, regardless of ability to pay. That does not mean the services are free. Rather, it means we will sponsor those schools who do not have the funds to purchase Radiance themselves. But, first, let’s talk about the technology and its practical application for schools.

Radiance is made up of two critical components. Open Source Intelligence or OS-INT, which acts like a super-charged web search, and Human Intelligence or HUM-INT, which is powered by our See Something Say Something (S4) mobile app. OS-INT scours all publicly available information on the web, prioritizing current behaviors to predict future action. OS-INT’s education bundles includes almost 9,000 terms related to suicide ideation, drug misuse, and school shooting threats. OS-INT performs more than 175,000 searches across the entire web, correlating names with associated risk behaviors. Consider that a manual web search of this magnitude would take just over 72 weeks for one person to complete.

The S4 mobile app allows for real-time, confidential reporting of suspicious behaviors. Information that comes into S4 can be overlaid with data from OS-INT, providing edge-to-edge risk detection across the spectrum of challenges schools face. A centralized management portal allows you to access real-time threats to geo-fenced facility locations, providing for timely intervention. Though not flawless, these two systems provide administrators and school communities with the best technology available today to prevent the devastating loss of young lives.

Think about the implications for early intervention related to suicide. Research shows that eight out of ten people considering suicide show some sign of their intentions, whether in person or online. S4 provides students a confidential and easy-to-use way to share concerning behaviors with school administrators, providing the critical information they need to take action before it is too late. Additionally, studies published in The American Journal of Public Health and Crisis show that real-time monitoring of online behavior can be a viable tool for assessing suicide risk factors on a large scale. That’s why we have configured OS-INT’s powerful search engine capabilities to help identify individuals who may be sharing suicidal thoughts online.

The use case for preventing school-based violence is very similar. Fortunately, the vast majority of schools will never have to face the tragedy of a school shooting, but all schools are singularly focused on ensuring that their campus are safe from this threat. Research shows that it is common for individuals planning a school attack to show signs ahead of time. A report by the Secret Service and the Department of Education, found that individuals involved in school-based violence showed concerning behaviors prior to the attack 93 percent of the time. Even more alarming, the study also found that in 80 percent of the incidents at least one other person had prior knowledge, and more than one person had prior knowledge almost 60 percent of the time.

S4 gives students the confidential platform to share concerns and it provides school administrators with a centralized platform to receive – and act on – those reports in real time. Additionally, OS-INT provides the ability to proactively search for publicly available social media and web postings that may indicate an attack is in the planning phases. We appreciate the tireless efforts of all the educators, administrators and school security personnel, and thank you for your commitment to our next generation. We truly believe that Radiance is a powerful tool in these efforts, and have made the pricing for Radiance simple, and accessible.

Taken annually, the price is no more than $.25 per student. We will make this technology available to any school that would like to implement it on their campus, and can have you up and running in within hours or days at the most.

We founded Lumina with the mission of protecting what matters most. We know that you do that each and every day for the students in your care. We would be honored to work with you, and to be your partner in these efforts.

Sincerely,

Allan Martin
